We recognize that Hawaiʻi’s history, including the arrival of Western influences, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the suppression of Hawaiian language and culture, has shaped the experiences of our communities in lasting ways. The effects of these changes, along with ongoing social and economic challenges, continue to influence the well-being of individuals and families across our islands today.

Before Western contact, Hawaiian society was guided by values of aloha, kuleana, mālama and lōkahi. These principles fostered a deep sense of connection and responsibility, where caring for one another, caring for ʻāina and caring for future generations were inseparable. These enduring values continue to offer guidance for building strong, healthy and resilient communities.
