Restoring Hope: Helping Maui Heal
The 2023 wildfires across Maui claimed the lives of 102 people and burned nearly 6,700 acres across the island, forever changing the lives of thousands of residents. As the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, the disaster left lasting emotional and psychological challenges that continue to affect people throughout Maui County.
In response, Maui United Way launched the ʻOhana Mental Health Grant program to expand access to critical behavioral health services. Through this initiative, Maui United Way invested in a network of trusted nonprofit partners serving communities across Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi, providing culturally responsive support for keiki, kūpuna, pregnant mothers, wildfire survivors and others in need.
The effects of trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use challenges continue to be felt across the community. By strengthening local mental health services and increasing access to care, the ʻOhana Mental Health Grant is helping residents find support, build resilience and move forward on the path to healing.
