Three years ago, the Yadao ʻohana of Lāhainā watched the home they had spent decades working to build disappear in the wildfires. For four generations, that home represented years of sacrifice, hard work and hope. It wasn't just where they lived. It was the American dream they had built together.⁠ ⁠ In a single afternoon, that dream was reduced to ashes.⁠ The road home was long. They endured months of uncertainty, paying a mortgage on a home that no longer existed while trying to rebuild their lives. There were moments when they wondered if they would have to leave Hawaiʻi and the community they loved behind forever.⁠ ⁠ Through the generosity of our donors, Maui United Way provided rental assistance that helped ease the family's financial burden, giving them the stability they needed to rebuild and eventually return home.⁠ ⁠ This March, the Yadao ʻohana became one of the first families to return to a rebuilt home in Lāhainā. For Bhejay, the feeling wasn't excitement. It was "relieved, peaceful, blessed." ⁠ ⁠ Mahalo to everyone who has stood with Maui over the past three years. Your generosity is helping local families move from crisis to stability and, ultimately, back home.⁠
As we approach the third anniversary of the August 8, 2023 Maui wildfires, we pause to remember the 102 lives lost and honor every family and community forever changed. Recovery is not measured in headlines. It lives in the strength of those rebuilding, the compassion of neighbors helping neighbors and the unwavering commitment to one another. While much progress has been made, the journey continues. At Maui United Way, we remain committed to standing with Maui for as long as it takes. Mahalo to every donor, partner, volunteer and supporter who continues to help our community heal, rebuild and grow stronger. Together, we remember.
