At the federal level, pronouncements and actions to significantly cut funding happen swiftly, often met with meaningful opposition and demands to protect critical programs. While these fights play out in court and other arenas, nonprofits are left not knowing how, when, or even if the threats to their work will materialize. How can leaders plan for the future in a disorienting mix of incomplete information and existential threats? Out of more than 43,000 nominations submitted by Starbucks partners across the U.S. and Canada, Maui United Way was chosen as an organization that’s making a difference in local communities. Mahalo to our local Starbucks partners for recognizing our work to strengthen Maui, Molokai and Lānaʻi. This grant will help us continue supporting local families and building a stronger, more resilient Maui Nui. Thank you to @starbucks Foundation @sbuxhawaii and Starbucks partners for investing in our community.
Strong communities are built through partnership, and we're grateful for the support of @makaifoundation⁠ ⁠ Their investment helps Maui United Way reach those who are too often left behind, including kūpuna, individuals with disabilities and families facing complex challenges. Together, we help ensure that those who may fall through the cracks are met with aloha, compassion, and the support they need to move forward. This partnership helps us take on some of the hardest cases and provide individualized support to our most vulnerable neighbors.⁠
Congrats to the 12 nonprofit organizations that graduated from Maui United Way's Kahua Grants Cohort this week. ⁠ Boys & Girls Club @bgcmaui⁠ Catholic Charities @catholiccharitieshawaii⁠ Grow Some Good @growsomegood⁠ Habitat for Humanity Maui @habitatmaui⁠ Hāna Business Council @hbc96713⁠ Hoʻōla iā Mauiakama LTRG @mauilongtermrecovery⁠ Maui Historical Society @halehoikeike⁠ Maui Roots Reborn @rootsrebornmaui⁠ Our Kupuna @ourkupuna⁠ Pacific Birth Collective @pacificbirthcollective⁠ Piha Wellness & Healing @piha_maui⁠ What Makes You Feel Beautiful @whatmakesyoufeel_beautiful⁠ ⁠ Our nonprofit capacity-building incubator helps emerging and grassroots organizations across Maui, Molokai and Lānaʻi build stronger foundations for long-term sustainability and community impact. Through hands-on training, mentorship, technical assistance and grant-writing support, participants gain the tools and resources needed to strengthen their operations and grow their programs.⁠ ⁠ This year's cohort achieved an 86% increase in grant funding awarded and a 50% increase in grant applications submitted, helping local organizations secure new resources to serve our communities. Just as important, participants built lasting relationships and a network of peer support that will continue long after graduation.⁠ ⁠ Together, we're investing in the organizations working every day to strengthen the health, well-being and resilience of Maui County. ⁠
When the March Kona Low storms flooded his home in Kīhei, Keola was displaced, navigating an already difficult situation with limited mobility, a broken prosthetic and nowhere to turn.⁠ ⁠ Makai Foundation @makaifoundation, Maui Rapid Response @mauirapidresponse teamed with us so that Keola could find emergency housing and later connect to longer-term accommodations through Airbnb.org @airbnb. He got a safe place to stay, groceries, meals and the stability to begin rebuilding his life.⁠ ⁠ "I do not know what the future holds for me. A team is helping me get a new prosthetic, pursue FEMA assistance and determine what it will take for me to ever return home again. I am deeply grateful to so many for giving me a place to call home for a couple more weeks. It carried me through one of the hardest times in my life."⁠ ⁠ Stories like Keola's are only possible because of donors and partners who stepped up when our community needed it most. Your support helped provide shelter, food, hope and dignity to Maui residents facing crisis.
A recent visit with Resiliency Hub partner Keolamau Tengan of Kaʻehu at their Paukūkalo loʻi in #wailuku. We’re taking time to connect, listen and learn. These site visits let us hear from partners about their successes, challenges and evolving needs. Together, we are building resilience across Maui Nui.⁠
